There's a lot to distract players from the main story in Diablo 4, and there are hours of gameplay to be had without bothering Lilith or Lorath at all. However, there are some advantages to finishing at least some of the campaign, and unlocking The Sanguine Chapel is one of them.

It's a dungeon, like many others that players can find and explore, and it has the standard puzzle and elite enemy layout, but this location has an extra reward for Rogues and a chilling but compelling side quest, The Blood Chalice. It helps to have a guide not only to finish the dungeon, but unlocking it, and find its location in a dark and isolated area.

Unlocking The Dungeon

The Sanguine Chapel doesn't appear on the map until the player has completed as far as The Light's Protection, a quest in Act I of the campaign questline. This is only part of the way through the whole campaign, however, and the player can either finish the remaining quests in the Act I chain or head northeast.

The main story campaign takes the player through most of Sanctuary's several zones and includes 19 missions, the last of which is called Light's Resolve. It requires the player to find and talk to Neyrelle, who can be found near Yelesna. This small town is in the same zone, Fractured Peaks, but far to the south in Gale Valley.

The Rogue class has an extra incentive for opening the Sanguine Chapel. Finishing it rewards them with the Energizing Aspect. Imprint this on a ring and it generates extra energy whenever the player damages an Elite enemy using a Basic skill.

The Blood Sermon Quest

This corner of Fractured Peaks is populated by wild animals like bears and wolves, along with their mutated variants, and various kinds of undead. That means vampires, banshees, ghouls, skeletons, and ghostly fighters, and archers.

There are three dungeons tucked away in the Seat of the Heavens, the region in the far northeastern corner of Fractured Peaks.

The Bear Tribe Refuge

A small settlement that contains a waypoint and essential services such as a healer and a blacksmith. It's recommended to venture here to get to the waypoint, which is convenient to the stronghold of Malnok to the south.

There are also a few interesting side-quests to be found here, one of which is the Blood Sermon Quest. Pick a few up if collecting renown is part of the plan.

The Blood Sermon Quest

There are two places where players can find Sister Vera, the NPC that has this quest. She first appears in Kor Valar, the ruins to the northwest of the Bear Refuge, and reveals to the player a dying confession from a knight who passed away while she was trying to treat his wounds.

She'll mention that the Knight and the Bishop were drinking from a Red Chalice as part of some evil ritual. This leads to the task of going to the Sanguine Chapel to retrieve the chalice from the now-corrupted Bishop.

Some players have reported a bug in the quest in which Sister Vera isn't in the ruins but was located in the Bear Tribe Refuge. If she can't be found in Kor Valar, check the refuge.

The Sanguine Chapel

The enemies and general aesthetic of the Sanguine Chapel keep with the general theme of the region. There's no trick or trap to getting inside, but the door is in an awkward location anyway, so finding it might be enough of a challenge.

It's filled with a matter of undead along with corrupted Knights, so an Elixir of Undead Slaying is the most helpful. Other handy potions for the Sanguine Chapel include the Elixir of Shadow Resistance and the Iron Barb Elixir.

Location

The Sanguine Chapel is on a snowy ledge that's on the northeastern border of the zone. Follow the edge of the mountains south from Kor Valar until a winding road opens up to the left. This leads to the shrine of the Penitent, then further to Alabaster Peak, where the door to the Sanguine Chapel is located.

Unlocking The Inner Dungeon

As soon as the player enters the dungeon, a second quest will appear in their log to return the lost items to their pedestals and open the inner door. One is located on the east side of the dungeon, and the other is on the west side. Both are guarded by elite enemies and killing them reveals more of the mystery

Retrieving The Blood Chalice

After opening up the door that leads to the second half of the dungeon, players can go on a slaying spree to destroy every enemy in this section. Not just for fun, but it's required to open the door to the boss. They'll appear as red dots on the map.

Fighting The Blood Bishop

It helps to have minions or some distance weapons available for this fight. Use Evade when possible, along with any available damage shields, to avoid getting grabbed by the tentacles or hit by the shadow bolts.

The Bishop moves slowly and is fairly easy to hit on its own, which is why AoE and ranged damage are ideal here, but watch the floor. The Bishop will summon Blood Boils that explode unless the player destroys them first. Either avoid them or use a DoT spell to damage them while continuing to attack the Bishop.

Completing the Quest

Defeating the Bishop means that the dungeon is complete, and the Blood Chalice should drop. The best thing to do at this point is to port directly back to the Bear Clan Refuge to claim the reward. Sister Vera gives the character a cache, some gold, a few experience points, and a cryptic farewell that seems to suggest the adventure might not be over.

Diablo 4 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
