Helltides are new events introduced in Diablo 4 that offer a new way for players to grind for gear. The never-ending downpour of demons in these affected areas comes not only with more potential for loot drops, but also a method to target-farm the gear players want.

Tortured Gifts reward players with items of a specific type when opened. These are generally good for gearing in late-game Diablo 4, but endgame players who want a shot at as many Ancestral items as possible will want to aim for something a little more specific—Tortured Gifts of Mysteries, otherwise known as Mystery Chests.

Diablo 4: What are Tortured Gifts of Mysteries?

Tortured Gifts of Mysteries are rare, hidden chests that only appear when Helltides are active. They drop a random assortment of items and compared to their more common counterparts, they seem to have better drop rates.

Once players reach World Tier 3, Helltides will start appearing all over Sanctuary. As players roam around these regions, they'll notice that regular Tortured Gifts have appeared on their maps. These feature targeted drops such as weapons, accessories, and armor pieces.

Tortured Gifts of Mysteries are not marked on the map. Instead, they will only appear once players come close enough to their locations. They are more expensive to open and are much harder to find than regular Helltide chests, but they tend to give better loot overall.

Luckily, these chests have multiple predetermined spawn points per region. Once a player finds a Tortured Gift of Mysteries chest in one area, then it's likely that it will be there again once another Helltide begins. It's best to keep track of any spawn points players find for posterity's sake.

How to Farm Helltides

All Tortured Gift chests require players to spend varying numbers of Aberrant Cinders in order to be opened. Cinders drop randomly from slain monsters or Damned Souls that have a red, misty aura around them. For reference, all mystery chests require 175 Cinders.

The best way to farm Aberrant Cinders is to bounce between event zones inside a region. Public events seem to appear more often during active Helltides, and players will be able to get their usual rewards as well as Aberrant Cinders by completing them.

Events also spawn in predetermined areas per region. Again, it's best to keep track of where events happen so as not to miss out on any potential rewards.

Additionally, more monsters will spawn around Helltide areas. Demon dens and cannibal camps have a high chance of being denser than usual, making them great places to stay and slay in. Cultists may also be encountered around the map, and they can often be found summoning large demons that drop Aberrant Cinders when slain. Lastly, expect to see tons of elites roaming the world, especially on higher difficulties.

Diablo 4 is available for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5.
