Diablo 4's Unique items are extremely rare, but they often define a build or form the very backbone of certain setups. They aren't exactly mandatory when it comes to making an endgame-viable character, but they certainly help when it comes to breaking through power thresholds or achieving certain synergies.

Among the existing set of Uniques is the Grandfather, a two-handed weapon that makes a triumphant return in Diablo 4. It hasn't changed much from its previous incarnations, which is a good thing considering how powerful it can be for certain setups. Here are a couple of tips on how to hunt for this sword.

How to Get the Grandfather Unique Two-Handed Sword

The Grandfather is one of the six ultra-rare items in Diablo 4. Much like the Harlequin Crest, this item's drop rate is abysmal, and there's no surefire way to get it apart from just playing the game normally.

One important thing to note about ultra-rare Uniques is that they will only appear once a character has reached level 85. On top of this, players must be playing in World Tier 4. It's unclear if the drop chance for ultra-rares increases based on the player's level and as of writing, the Grandfather has only dropped once.

Players who are determined to hunt this sword down should farm high-tier Nightmare versions of the Kor Dragan Barracks. Vampires (Revenant Knights in particular) have a higher chance of dropping 2H Swords. Nightmare Sigils may come with the Magic Find modifier, which makes enemies drop more loot on death. Finding a Kor Dragan Barracks sigil with this modifier may yield the best chance at getting the Grandfather from any loot source within the dungeon.

What Does the Grandfather Do?

Ironically, the Grandfather sword does not have any actual unique power. Instead, it rolls with significantly higher affix values compared to other items. It comes with a flat bump to max Life, a percentage bonus to all damage, a boost to all stats, and a modifier that makes it ignores durability loss. The Grandfather's main draw, however, is its insanely high Critical Strike Damage modifier.

So far, only Barbarians and Necromancers can wield Two-Handed Swords in Diablo 4. Since drop tables are adjusted to match whichever character players are currently using, it's best to farm for the Grandfather using either of these classes. Running dungeons with a full party also maximizes the odds of getting this Unique since everybody gets their own instanced loot.

Diablo 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
